I never thought of it till u mentioned it. But interesting how in the animal kingdom it is the opposite.. in terms of look. but the courting is pretty much the same. Only that the male uses their looks to get the female..hmm..

Re: The “Pretty” Gene Means Popularity?

It's a fact that people are superficial, to a certain degree when it comes to mate selection. It's an integral part of our evolutionary makeup. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, seriously. It's your own funeral if you choose a partner with an obnoxious personality ya?

I believe that the problem begins when some people believe that they have the right to pass judgment on another person's looks. While another person may be sexually unappealing to you, it does not give you the right to, err... be an asshole.

It's ok to be superficial, we all do it anyway and it helps us make our initial assessments of the opposite sex. But don't take it too far as it can cloud our judgment, and it's certainly not ok to be an asshole.

Nuff said. In nature, it's usually the MALES that need to be "pretty" so as to court females during the "mating season". Look at the peacock and the peahen as a very good example - the peacock, the MALE of the species, has resplendent tail feathers to attract females to mate with him. The peahen, the FEMALE, is just..... brown. Nothing outstanding, nothing fancy.

Lions are another example. The male has nice manes, and they use this to attract females. The females, the lionesses, are plain by comparison.

It's only us humans and certain species of primates (ie monkeys without tails) that are reverse - the females are the ones doing the attracting.

Re: The “Pretty” Gene Means Popularity?

It's actually pretty weird if you look at nature.
